  • Use Image Feathering to give edited photos a professional look.

Feather Image Editing in Macromedia Fireworks

1. In your Fireworks PNG file, ready the original image you would like to edit.

2. Select the area that you would like to feather using one or more of the Bitmap Tools (the 4 shown below and the yellow magic wand below the marquee tool). The Lasso tool and the magic wand (selects one colored section it is clicked on) are very useful for fine tuning your outline.

3. Keep the shift button pressed if you want to do multiple selections within the image.

4. Important: Once you have drawn/selected the feather area, check if the selection is what you want deleted. If not, that is, the selected area is what you would like to keep, then right click the area, from the list select Modify Marquee >> Select Inverse (Ctrl+Shift+I).

5. Now you are ready to apply the feather. Right click on the selection once again, and from the pop-up list select Modify Marquee >> Feather. Give the feather radius in pixels (less for sharper feather and more for increased fading).

6. Now click delete to remove the unwanted (selected) area and your remaining required picture will be feathered nicely.

7. Tip: For a sharper finish give a feather radius 5 and click delete twice.

8. Tip: For extra fade (useful in collages) try a feather radius 30.

GIMP tips and tricks

A guide and manual that helps you to change eye color with Gimp.

1.select the iris before changing eye color. Select the iris of each eye with gimp's selection tool lasso Make the selection soft by using the Select > Feather dialog to avoid sharp edges, corners and stripes on the edge of your selection. I used a value of 7 px to make the selection in my image soft.

2. change eye color. Use the Filter > Colors > Filter Pack -dialog to change eye color with Gimp. This filter allows you to change eye color by changing the hue, saturation and value of all colors in a selection.
Click on the hue that you would like to enhance. Adjust the saturation and value after you change the color to your desired hue. I used a roughness of 0,15 = 15% to change eye color in my image gradually.

2. This tab allows you to manage the structure of your menu. Start off by filling in the forms, Text being the text you want to be shown, and link being the URl destination. This is your first link in the dropdown menu. To add a second link, click the + Sign. You will see a new row added, and a fresh set of forms to fill in. Add as many links as you need.

3. The appearance tab allows you to customize the look of your drop down menu. "Up-sate" is the look of your menu before mousover, and "Over-state" is the look of your menu on mousover. Customize your color and font any way you like.

4. The position tab allows you to choose where you want your menu to appear in relation to your textlink. The image shows you a preview, the gray rectangle represents your link, and the blue rectangle represents your dropdown menu. Choose whichever you like, and press ok.

5. Dreamweaver will now create your menu, as well as the javascript file that feeds the menu. You will need both of these for your link to work!
